Lawn drainage
I have a section of my lawn which gets very little sun, even when we haven't had any rain for a while its still boggy and never drys out.
i have since removed the turf and found that there is a approx 7inchs of soil before I hit clay. I went down a further 8 inches and found nothing but clay. At this point I gave up.
Do I have to remove all the clay to improve the drainage or can anybody suggest anything different.
can anybody help , I just want a dry half decent lawn

Hi there clay is a living nightmare wet all winter and dry and cracking in summer if you get sun as you don't on that patch it will be very wet.you have several options you can dig the clay in to long runs in winter and allow frost to get to it this breaks down the structure of the soil but that winter time for now it wants digging over and you need to add gypsum this is a clay impover and dig in lime and compost bark as well this will flocculate the soil and help with drainage if treated like this every month it will improve
depends how much you want to dig down? I was told by a geologist that the clay in my garden went down approx. 300 FEET, so unless I was planning an open cast mine I decided against that action.
lots of sharp sand/horticultural grit/organic matter - dig it in as deep as you can.
if you can afford it look at land drains - make sure you don't drain it towards the house as one of my neighbours discovered!
