Laying turf with existing soil
Hi all,
We recently bought a garden that is full of rubble and recently discovered a giant slab of concrete 8m x 3m (used to be an outhouse I think). We want to get this clear then lay turf. I know that the standard procedure is to lay topsoil then lay turf. Topsoil seems very expensive - it will cost us over £1000 just for the soil. Below the concrete looks like decent soil - can we lay the turf directly on the soil that will be free of rubble and concrete? Or is topsoil strictly necessary?

No, topsoil is not necessary. Dig the area over well as the chances are that the ground under the concrete is very compacted. Level it and firm it over with your feet. Leave for a few weeks if possible to see if the level stays true, then rake and lay your turf. Water well.
