We have just built a pond, but have been told that it might after heavy rain overflow onto lawn. Any idea's on how to reduce the chances of this happening.

I seriously doubt it will be a major problem unless we have a biblical flood. You can always build up the sides of the pond and plant marginal plants to reduce the chances of it happening.
Thats what we call a 'bog garden' lovely for primulas and other wet loving plants,
I had to top mine up this week, water level dropped by 4 inches. No amount of rain is going to fill that up.
