Can I divide watermelon seedlings?

image

The local garden center had deal on veg plants, 3 for .99c, so I bought a few.  I know watermelon dislike root disturbance, but it seems a shame to have to thin out half the plants (who puts six seeds in such a tiny pot?) without being able to make use of them.  Exactly how much will root disturbance bother them?

Utah, USA.

Never having grown watermelons I've no idea how much they'll dislike it, but I'd do it anyway - growing so closely together will impair their growth so I'd go ahead, do it quickly and gently - I reckon they'll be fine image
