growing clematis through tree

Just a quick question, i was wondering if it would harm my cooking apple tree if i let my clematis armandii grow through it? Im thinking it would make the tree look less bare in winter image

Hi bekkie, my armandii got very big, high up in a tree. Then bits browned off in the colder winters and i couldn't reach to get them down. It's big enough to swamp the average apple tree as well

Its only a small tree, its around 15 years old, but no more than 6 or 7 ft tall. The armandii was hacked back to the ground last spring when it broke its support. Hadnt thought about it swamping the tree! I was thinking it might encourage pests and diseases? Hmmm, dunno what to do now, i suppose i could try it, then if it gets too much, just cut it back image

Watching thread as my Armandii is currently growing rampant through one of my trees! I let it be during the winter as we wanted the privacy from the neighbours side windows which bare branches do not afford us. Worried now that it will swamp the tree which is still quite young and yet to come into leaf!!

    Hi Abby2 image

I had no option but to cut my arnandii down entirely this time last year, ive lost this years flowers, but the plant has come back as good as new, so dont be afraid to give it a haircut image

Could you keep me posted as to if it has any bad effect on the tree please image

To think when i planted mine i was worried it wouldnt grow! image
  • Mine hangs on the fence on a black aluminium trellis that I built from the tubes for fruit cages but also rampages up into our neighbour's pyracantha. I control it by basically savaging it every year after it flowers and the display this year has been amazing with the scent being so powerful it was almost nauseating!

It might be a bully, but im very glad to have it, mine is in almost total shade, quite amazing how it can make enough food to be a bully! image

Your trellis sounds nice Steve, i think black is a very useful colour in the garden image
  • I needed something strong, originally it was on one of those extending flat wooden ones but it tore that apart...
