Australian Tree fern

Hi,
As in the heading, my tree fern is separating in the crown, the once roundish crown in now forming into 3, so the middle is bare. I can only think it may be that it's been too dry over winter. It has been in a garage, as we moved in November and had nowhere else to keep away from frost.
Can anyone else throw any light on it or give me tips on trying to get it to grow in the middle again?
