Magnolia tree
I have a Magnolia tree in the garden its 30 ft tall and very wide it's healthy and flowers beautifully . I suspect It is as old as my 1940s house . My dilemma is its near the house and the patio has started to rise near it . I'm concerned about the long term damage . It is also making the house dark when in full leaf - shall we have it pruned ? Or do I need to think about cutting it down . It also takes a lot of time collecting petals that make the garden untidy , as I get older I'm not sure this will be feasible

You could have the crown lifted, but that wont stop the roots. Magnolias tend to respond to pruning by sending out more shoots. If it makes the house dark, then you might be best to take it out and perhaps plant a new one, a small one perhaps like a Magnolia liliflora nigra.
