Moving daffodils

AlxNicAlxNic Posts: 259

I intend to move some daffodils. The flowers have died and I have deadheaded. I know they need to stay in the ground until the foliage has finished feeding the bulb.

Can I carefully dig them up now and put them in a pot to finish feeding? or will I disturb the process? (I'd like to get to the spot where they are currently growing)

Thanks

i believe the best thing to do is let them die down completely where they are then move them.

I might be wrong but that's my understanding

I think jpsbcfc is right but I do that a lot Alex as I need the space. Just remember to label the pots! You could give them a feed before digging them up too.

carefully dig them up, try and leave as much of the root ball intact and then pot up, then you can leave the leaves to die down before lifting the dried bulbs and storing them somewhere cool and dark until you want to replant them,

I have never thought of drying the bulbs once the leaves have died down for storage treehugger, I usually leave them in the pots until it is time to plant them back out again. I am going to try this as it will really tidy the garden up of pots all over the place image

I saw a garden famous for its daff displays on TV last year or so where the very mature owner simply dug up and instantly transplanted any which needed moving, even if still in flower where you have advantage of knowing which variety you are moving. Very handy when sorting out a mixed planting. The trick was to avoid any delay, take them up with a decent root ball and re-plant them deep. He wan't particularly gentle in his handling but dealt with one plant at a time. Worked for him for decades so I guess there is something in his method.

Thank you all for your advice.

I have decided to go for it. I may decide where to put them now and move directly to the new place - or if I can't decide I'll pot them

    Thanks for the help

Thanks, Verdun. I'm new to this, how deep is fairly deeply, please?
