went to morrisons today and they had 12in wide (guestimate) terracotta pots for £2 each if anyone needs any, they weren't reduced that was just the price of them, i bought six
I'd not thought of the drying out aspect, just thought of the sort of pots I'd seen in certain 'quality' gardens - but I suppose they had gear deniers to keep on top of the watering.
But isn't there also some benefit to the soil being able to 'breathe' through the terracotta?
Also, if a terracotta pot gets a bit dry you can rehydrate it from the sides as well as from the top or bottom by dunking it or standing it in deep water - not that I ever let my pots dry out of course!
i think i remember somewhere about standing them in water birdy but i may line them with something too, i grew potatoes in hessian sacks last year without lining them , big mistake on the drying out front but you live and learn
Shh, don't tell everyone about the pots - I can't get there till tomorrow. If I'm lucky enough to get some I'll line the sides with cut-up compost bags.
Edd I see you didn't manage to fix the leak in the paddling pool

Yes, Edd...
Er, yes Edd...
Sorry Edd
Oh... By the way "gear deniers' (in my earlier post) was my iPad's typo for 'gardeners' - not an oblique reference to some sort of nylon stocking...
