Bramble covered old, dry stone wall

i have a long, low, bramble covered stone wall which is the remains of an old barn but is in a perfect position to act as a barrier between two areas of the garden. I would like to get rid of the brambles??? And plant with floral cascades like aubrietia. Will this work? How do I kill the brambles?

Are you opposed to using weedkiller?

I got rid of most of the brambles at my work, i dug up as much roots as possible, there are a few coming back that are getting tackled next week. My boss doesn't like me using weed killer as there are lots of plants to protect

Spray the brambles with weedkiller after chopping them back to about a foot, 18 inches. Once they are completely dead try and dig out. If impossible cut back as close to the wall as possible. Replant with whatever but keep an eye on the old bramble roots and respray carefully if necessary.

Brilliant. I'm a pragmatist so will use whatever works. Thanks everyone.

I had a rats nest in my compost heap...think it was the heat they liked. I whacked em all with a spade. Not nice but nicer than rats.

Don't cut them back prior to spraying.. something like Roundup works best if you apply it to all the foliage so it can draw it down into the roots and kill off the entire plant.
