I found a nest of new born mice in an old shed while clearing it out so I picket the nest up on a spade and placed it outside while I decided what to do with it, less than 30 minutes later when I went back to it all the baby mice had died. They don't seem to last long without their mother at that early stage.
Thank you all who have replied. I have now done the job as Blue onion suggested in newspaper and emptied compost bin. I will wet as I go and stir it up.Thanx.
I remember having some field mice in my compost bin, some years ago. Sometimes, when I opened the lid to drop in some veggie peelings there would be a tiny mouse blinking up at me. I'm sure that they thought I was God, dropping manna from Heaven

Field mice are cute, and no danger to anyone (unless they go for your throat!)
