I planted two big containers with bulb lasagne for the spring and it’s now got new tulips but lots of leaves from daffs that are dying back, crocuses and cyclamen.
I plan to plant summer bulbs but have planted this to the top.
Can I let the leaves die back but try to plant summer bulbs amongst the (small) gaps? Would this work?
I don’t want to dig out the spring bulbs but think it would be a shame to have no new flowers in it during the summer.
After many years of just such a dilemma, I came up with a solution: Use an ordinary plant pot that fits snugly inside a terracotta pot. Once bulbs have finished, lift the inner pot, place it to one side (with a good foliar feed, having dead headed first) and insert another pot with bedding of choice. This works well for me - and may be a help to others who wonder what to do with rather tatty-looking foliage from spring bulbs. Come the autumn, either just re-insert the previous pot, or plant it up with new bulbs. (Some tulips are less reliable year on year, and your spring pots may need refreshing! The old bulbs can be planted at the back of the border if wanted).
