growing toms?

Hi everybody. I'm fairly new here, I got a free packet of 'experimental blight resistant' toms from Thompson and Morgan as part of a trial. I last grew tomatoes as a teenager about 15 years ago, so any and all help and advice would be appreciated and greatly welcome. Thanks, Nikki.

  • they are pretty hard to mess up really just don't forget to pinch out the side shoots and the growing tip when it has 3-4 trusses of fruit on! image

Start them off now on a warm windowsill. Two seeds per small pot in seed compost. If one of the seedlings is obviously inferior then whip it out and bin it otherwise they can both be pricked out into larger pots (9cm) when they have a couple of pairs of proper leaves. Grow them on until the roots peek out of the holes in the bottom of the pot by which time the plants should be robust looking and approx 15cm high. Now is the time to put them in their final pots or grow bags in the greenhouse but if you intend to grow them outdoors, harden them off gradually.

This shows you how to get more from your plants by increasing the roots. You can grow them in pots using the same method.

  • Hi flowerbunnyimage mine arrived toimage had more or else given up at being chosen to give them a trial. I have six seeds and have already got them started in the propagator BUT if you haven't got one a 3" pot with half a lemonade bottle cover on a warm windowsill will do fine. Then when they germinate pot up individually  and watch them go they won't be able to go outside untill possibly whitsun or seven later. Simon Knott has a good thread on growing tomatoes and is worth a watch of his utube thread . Good luck will follow our progress and hope they turn out to be really blight resistant.

  • Thanks so much everybody primrose We'll stay in touch and compare notes!!

I also got some of the 2016 experimental tomato seeds. sowed them 11 days ago on a warm windowsill, but as yet no seedlings have emerged. How Long did your take to germinate?

  • I also got the experimental tomato seeds from T&M and out of the seven seeds that I sowed, only one has germinated. Has anybody else experienced poor germination rates from these seeds?

I experience poot germination from almost all T&M seeds.

Never buy T&M seeds because they are such poor germinaters.
  • Good to know! Well the experimental tomato seeds were free, they are the ones that Monty Don are using in his tomato blight experiment! Definitely won't be buying them in the futureimage
