Grass.
Hi All,
We have recently moved into a new house and the garden is west facing and quite narrow therefore the neighbour's fence and surrounding buildings cast a shadow over the garden.
Currently the garden is paved however we would like to take up the paving stones and lay turf.
Can I receive some advice on grass in shadow? The grass will have access to sky (therefore no trees or buildings directly above the grass) but direct sunlight hitting the grass will be very little to non-existent.
I’m hoping that as the year moves on and the sun gets higher the garden will get some sunlight, but it still leaves the problem in the winter.
Would it be advisable to turf the garden or should we forget about this as the grass will not grow and die?
Thank you,
Mark
P.s. Please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I’ve never had a garden before (37 years old!) and I did my first bit of weeding ever over the weekend!

You can get grass for shady lawns but you need to bear in mind that even if you go that route, it'll never be a fantastic lush lawn and it'll be prone to weeds and if its damp, a lot of moss.
A better idea if you want a bit of greenery, is to lift some of them and plant in some shade loving garden plants?
