One thing I didn't mention is we found it is very weather critical too. We found it had to be just right to work the clay, not too wet else we just got stuck to the bottom of the pond, not too dry so the clay wasn't hard lumps and impossible to work with. I would do it again, a 'puddling party' does sound like it would be a good way to go Wildlife Ranger, if one can find enough crazy people to do it.
The black edging stops the sun getting on the liner, that will in time ruin the liner, it also stands up about 2inches so when you put your soil or turf round the edge, it doesnt fall in the water.
