    I have always assumed piles of wood will house beetles and other insects. So I have piles of old roots and other wood. I know from experience that plants close to water such as a river have far more insects than those elsewhere. I assume water is required for the lifecycle of many insects. But it really is dramatic. And many insects are associated with old trees. 

    I made some insect houses by drilling holes in logs and screwing on a roof. They are attached to a fence. Time will tell if they work. They look nice though.

    I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the best food plant for insects. Grow cabbages, you'll have loads of creepy crawlies. I had some lovely cabbage white caterpillars.
