Consider the Everlasting Sweet Pea (Lathyrus latifolius)  - not half as much bother as ordinary sweet peas - tough as old boots once they get going, and covered with flowers all summer.  The only thing they don't have is the scent - but they have a lot of other things to recommend them http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/3303338/How-to-grow-the-everlasting-pea.html

I know it's not from seed, but why not get a rambling rose?  I grew a Paul's Himalayan musk, it grew to 12 ft and covered a 30 ft fence in 3 years

What about buying 2 or 3 clematis/honeysuckles and taking cuttings from them to grow on. A bit quicker than growing from seed and not as expensive as buying individual plants. Or even better, go round your friends and take cuttings from theirs!

I have had great success with the everlasting sweet pea.. For some reason I find they do best if previous years growth not cut back  until March.
