    Hi Shelley image

Conifers can take all the moisture and nutrition out of the soil so that few plants can grow near them.  Some of them can also make the soil very acidic which doesn't suit many plants.

What sort of conifer is causing what sort of problem?

Are the pots getting sun and well watered and plants inside the pots well fed all spring and summer?

I was thinking the same as Blairs image   The area at the foot of a wall can be baking hot and in a rain shadow.
