Reclaimed soil - Potatoes the Answer ??

I have an area some 8 foot by 8 foot that was under a green house when the previous owners had it for possibly 5 years

Since they left 13 years ago I have had my shed on it but due to Mr Rat I have removed the shed recently

I am left with soil that contains some small grit and some bigger bits of old pot ....3inches x 3 inches.

The area is partly under the shade of a fence and a small tree

Friends

Would you suggest potatoes as a means to bring this plot back into production or is more drastic action needed ?

Potatoes are often lauded as the answer to breaking up soil but in fact it is the gardener who does all the hard work by digging it over on behalf of the crop. At least you will have something to eat for your efforts.

The soil is broken up and looks quite good as its dark and crumbly

It was just that it has not had any crops in it for over 20 years

Dig-in some well-rotted farmyard manure when you plant the spuds and it will almost certainly be fine.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
