Growing carrots in a container
in Fruit & veg
Hi all, need advice.
i have just got hold of an old recycle box 15in x 20in x 15in deep.
Do you think I will be able to grow short carrots in this as I have always failed miserably in the ground?
cheers

Love it Verdun. Great advice.
Here I go then.
I've grown Chantenay carrots in just such a box - very successful.
I also grew globe beetroot, Swiss chard and dwarf french beans in other recycling boxes.

Thanks for the help Young Man
You need to make lots of drainage holes in the bottom of the boxes

Phew! Just had a fab full day in the garden.
thanks to everyone for the advice. Some great ideas.
Dove, I love the idea of growing french beans in a box/ container - I'll put some copper tape around the top to deter the snails and slugs. They have devastated crops previously.
Happy gardening Folks - time for a soak!
If you stand the box on a few bricks etc, you'll also have a better chance of avoiding carrot fly which allegedly only fly 18 inches high. For the last few years I've very successfully grown carrots in raised wooden planters for that very reason and the days of my carrot crops being totally devastated by carrot fly are becoming a distant memory!
Works for parsnips too, but those need a deeper box - mine is 24" deep.
Always grow my carrots in containers-I usually add a good couple of handfuls of sand to the compost mix to keep moist. Also grow Peas, Mange Tout, and Dwarf Beans in containers. Don't laugh, but I've also grown Cabbage and Caulis in big catering baked beans tins. One per tin......and they turned out OK!!
