my new garden

Hello all,

me and my family have just moved into our 1St new home and the real reason I bought it was its has a 120 ft x 35 ft grassed garden plus a 30ft x 30ft courtyard garden but please don't tell my wife ??? I have already drawn up a detailed plane for my half of the garden as I splitting it up as my young children need a grassed area were they can be set free.

I am looking for a bit of help as the bigger garden is a little uneven down one side as I understand it was a alotment  at some point and has been left for the grass to take over what would be the best way to level it out???? The few people I has asked have said I should use a rotavater but I am not to keen as the grass is really lush and after the first cut looks great please help as I am new to gardening I have only had a small courtyard garden before and need a little help I will post pictures on this website of my progress. Many thanks.

You did say a 'little uneven'. If it is just a few bits, then you could lift the turf carefully and fill in/dig out the soil underneath and then put the turf back down. If it was me, I would mix up a pail or a barrowful, depending on the size, of compost, sieved soil and grass seed and spread that over the uneven bits, Tamp it down and water well.

Perhaps someone else has a better idea? If you wanted a perfect lawn, lift all the turf, dig and rake over level etc and then reseed. But that is quite a big job esp. if it is become a children's play area.
