Leeks & Spring Onions

I've just put a row of Leeks and a row of Spring Onions in (plants)

Two questions as I've never grown them before;

1) Slug pellets around the rows? (Or is it too early / they're not interested)

2) Will the pigeons nibble at them? (I doubt it as they've never touched my ordinary onions in the past)

    Hi image

    Used to grow these when i had my allotments, never had trouble from anything except allium leaf miner. Have you looked up how to plant leaks? Only asking cos its a bit of a weird technique! image

    Slugs don't like either of them so no need for treatments, neither do birds.

  • Yes thanks Bekkie (well I did my best)

    Pretty much as I thought Dave but thanks anyway!

  • leaf miner had all mine last year        keep them covered

    I grew some leeks in my garden in september  last year (just  emptied a packet of seeds on to a 1ft by 3ft bed ) well they are very  small being so close together   my question is can I dig them up and transplant them on to my allotment and will they be ok at this time of the year ?

    I'll put that down as  No then !

  • Yes you can, they'll be okay. Plant some seeds now so you have a few to put in the ground later in the year too.

    Sparrows nibbled my leeks, so I had to cover them. They also nibbled beetroot seedlings last year.
