Hostafan 1 - I cut Dahlias back in September because they had finished flowering. Location - 5 mls. north of Chester.
You should leave cutting them back as late as possible, in order for them to develop bigger tubers.
I don't lift mine I leave them in the ground. The are I grow them in is fairly dry and south facing and I havent lost any over the last 6 years. The ones in pots are new ones that I potted up at the end of Feb. No sign of life yet.
My Arabian nights dahlia tubers are all showing signs of new growth. Nothing from the llandaff ones yet though. Mine are in pots in a window.
I used to leave mine in the ground in my light sandy soil in Hants, but here in N Devon it's heavy sodden clay , so wouldn't dare leave them in .
