anyone know about spiders?

Ive been cutting back and removing a conifer hedge which has been there for around 35 years, found a colony of spiders today,didnt immediately recognise them, sorry didnt take a pic, hadnt got my phone! Did a search, the closest was some sort of lace web spider and a something else which escapes me at the moment! Any of you have any idea of what they are? I intend to use some of the hedge to make a new habitat under another hedge, concerned im making some rare species homeless! Thanks for your help
