Hydrangea Help

i have just bought my first home and the previous owner left a variety of plants. I am very much a novice, this is my first time having a garden. I adore hydrangeas and am determined to love and care for the three bushes but don't know where to start. There is lots of new growth at the bottom which is good. It is well watered which I understand is key. What do I do with the brown stems???. There are no buds on them and they are brittle and dry. I have removed the worst which just pulled out cleanly with a gentle tug. I don't know which variety it is so am not sure whether to prune them right down to the base so all you see is new growth or should i just take the seed heads off or leave them be? Thanks to you all for any

Cut out any obvious dead wood and last years dry flower heads to just above new leaves.

You could cut down to the base but you would lose the flowers for this year.

  • Thank you. There are no new leaves at all on the stalks, they are brittle and dry. The new growth is all from the soil and not attached to existing wood. Will there be flowers from that new growth? Its only about 2 inches high at the moment but is a lovely vibrant green and looks healthy.
