Greenhouse to garden?

Hi,

I have lots of strawberries in pots and potatoes in bags that all appear to be thriving in the greenhouse. They are taking up quite a lot of room now and want to know if I can put these outside in the garden now? I could use cloches or fleece for protection from frost - or is it still too early and cold to put out?

I need to get my second early and maincrop potatoes on the go in bags and could do with the space. Also can I plant some of my potato sets straight out in the ground now?

Thanks

  • Hi Mooresthemerrier.

I set mine out into a sheltered area of the garden yesterday April 6th inside a mesh cage arranged along a windbreak fence. I shall cover with fleece each night and also pull over a sloping roof of polythene sheeting to prevent the fleece becoming rain sodden. This has served me well over the past 40 years here in N Yorks. As for you planting direct into your garden it really depends on which part of the country you garden in, but as the soil has warmed up considerably these past few days it should be possible to set out now and watch weather conditions as they break the surface maybe late April / early May, but be prepared to earth up and cover with fleece etc if late frosts are expected.

  • Thanks oldtimer2. Sounds like a good plan!! I am on 3 long days at work now so I will have to leave it until the weekend (there never seems to be enough hours in the day!). I will make a little shelter so I can start moving things out of the greenhouse so I can start off other plants/veg etc.

I did plant my onion sets today though - I thought I may as well seeing as the weather has picked up a bit. I have covered over the lot with fleece. I live on the Wirral so the weather isnt too bad. Fingers crossed now image
