Mystery viburnum

I'm hoping someone can help me identify this highly fragranced shrub which has drawn a blank with my usual sources (ie my mum, aunt etc!)  It's in the front garden of the house we've just bought. I think due to the size (over 2metres) it's quite old so may be an obscure cultivar. It appears to be a viburnum from the flowers - but the leaves, being lobed, seem wrong. I can't find reference of any similar Viburnum except perhaps v.farerri. It flowered very early (Feb) before leaves, and is still flowering in April. What's so amazing is the intense fragrance which is still going strong.

Can anyone help out?

Could well be a Ribes, but it seems very early for them to flower.

  • Oh wow thanks guys - That's been bugging me for weeks. And it vindicates my opinion that it looks "a bit like a blackcurrant bush".

Weird how much it looks like a viburnum flower. And the smell is fantastic. image

  • Ribies Sanguenium for sure. I have two in my garden and I love them. Mine are the same colour as yours and mine are in full blossom now, one of mine was also in blossom at the end of February. Beautiful aren't they!image
