Planting a new tree where another one died

We had a Cotoneaster tree in our frnot garden for 30 years.  We loved watching the Fieldfare strip the berries in November.  It died last year and we had it removed and the stump grubbed up.  We want to plant another one, a Cotoneaster Hybrid Pendulus but my neighbour said if we planted it in the same position it is likely to die also.  Is there any truth in this.
