Thinning out dianthus

I have lots of dianthus in two big pots (have had them for 3 years) and it looks to me like they need thinning out so I'm wondering if now would be a good time to plant them out in a plot.  I have to admit to being a bit nervous about disturbing them though and I can imagine that all the roots will be tangled together.  How do I do it?  I'm tempted to put the pot on the ground and stand on it to kind of ease the whole thing out of the pot and then try to separate them from there?  Any suggestions please?

I'd plant it out as a lump then take cuttings to make new plantsimage

Ok, I've never taken cuttings before so I guess it's time I learned.  Yes Verdun, they're garden pinks.  I'll get a good gardening friend to come and help me in May to take the cuttings and then hopefully I'll have them all renewed for next year.  Thanks image
