How big a pot?

I've bought an acer orange dream to grow in a pot but I'm not sure how big a pot I need to begin with. It's growing in a 7 inch/18cm pot at the moment. I've read to start small and repot every couple of years. Is a 30cm pot ok or do I need to get bigger?
