To one off nematode slugs or not?

My garden is full of slugs (small grey kind). I've been collecting and killing them but at some point I will plant out my dahlias courgettes and artichokes. As these are slug magnets should I apply a one off nematodes at that time or will this result in slug plague if I don't keep it up (Which I can't afford!). I haven't seen any frogs or toads but there's a lot of millipedes. Any thoughts?

I've done a one off application in the past - I found it worked really well as it gave my young plants chance to settle in and get that big bigger when they are better able to withstand the slugs. Like you I couldn't afford to keep applying It.

No they don't work on snails, as they live above ground.

There is no point using them until soil temperature is above 5C.

no i noticed little activity so far, so my autumn sown sweet peas have got a small headstart, at least that's one positive to this awful weather, too cold for the slimy little ******s!

I've got quite a few slithering about.  Organic slug pellets for me at this time of the year when the  young shoots are emerging. Later on when they get a bit bigger it will be nipping out with a bucket to collect the little sods.

I guess if it only last 6 weeks max then it can't really affect eco balance on the garden. I have already been picking up slugs. Never tried organic pellets as i'm a bit paranoid with a toddler running about.
  • a lot of vacant snail houses on the veg patch a week after applying nemaslug   suggests that a nematode cannot differentiate between the two a mollusc is a mollusc in the nematode world. the ones that escape get them drunk with beer traps they deserve it for being so evasive

I've got a couple of resident thrushes in my garden, so I am hoping that they earn their keep!( extra tasty tip-bits at the bird feeding station)
