New nest?

Lily PillyLily Pilly Posts: 3,845

Moving a log pile OH has just found a nest.  We are not actually sure if it is this years as seems a little early but the 4 eggs, all pale sand in colour are in tact

we both feel if it was last years the eggs would have decomposed a bit. there is no I e squawking  or screeching at us.  Have put it back but worried we have caused chaos

anyone any ideas?

It does seem a little early, do you think they are wren eggs because of the situation you found them in? Wrens don't usually start breeding until late April. Though more and more the animals are not following what it says in the books.image

Does seem early, but certainly the right colour for wren eggs.

I have various birds nest building, but I am unaware of any laying going on.

How can you lie there and think of England

About two weeks ago I found 3 eggs two broken on the floor next to a large ivy covered tree in my garden, they were v. pale blue and about the size of a chicken's egg.  They had a bit of a translucent look about them.  Have no idea what they were but it did look as if they had fallen out of the tree .

its unlikely to be this years nest,

what does the nesting material look like? does it look fresh or does it look like its been exposed to the elements for a while?

it could have been a very late nest from last year that got abandoned?

Sorry this has gine in upside down ( having a real problem  with photos presently)

however, give the detail if you able to zoom in.  It all looks pretty fresh, moss certainly is.  It's been hours now and no sign of anyone.  Feel rather guilty!

Success with the camera, this was taken a few minutes ago, still no sign of bird

but what nest/ eggs do you think they are? We had heavy snow in Tuesday and I am wondering if they deserted because it was so  cold ?

What a beautiful nest, 10 out of 10 to the parents for their design skills.

looks like a robin nest to me and the location would be about right. It does feel a bit early but they pair up around Christmas time and I think they are nesting late march. They can be a bit flighty when the eggs are newly laid and easily desert. (technically it is illegal to destroy the nest or eggs at this time of year whether abandoned or not so all you can really do is leave it )
