Seed germination Rate

pootlerpootler Posts: 95

I have sown Cosmos and Night Scented Stock and about 50% have germinated in their trays by a window indoors.  The Dahlias around 90% and Courgette 100%.  I consider the Cosmos and Stock to be easy to germinate but the numbers that have quite low.  Should I expect better germination rates or is this normal?

I would expect a lot higher rate for Cosmos.

I can't work out what the problem is, I am using a good quality seed compost.  I think the temperature is fine and the seeds are only a couple of months old, I am sowing them at the right time too......

I have sown cosmos this year and virtually every seed germinated in a couple of days.

glad of the reminder to sow cosmos. zinnias and calendula germinated in 3 days, brugmansias took a full 6 weeks, delphiniums a week, cosmidium still just hanging.

I have gone and had a prod around in the soil.  Some have just started to germinate now nearly a week later. I think I can see a little fuzzy white mould so I guess there must be some damping off going on.  I was reckless.... I confess...... I used a scoop that I didn't wash properly from last season so I think I might have cross infected the soil somehow.
