Thanks Edd, you and TC have got me interested in comfrey now, never had it before.

Do you grow from seed or would I have to buy a plant, and what variety should I look for?  Any tips for a comfrey newbie greatly appreciated.

I haven't really had a slug or snail problem since following the tip of putting out a few slug pellets on Valentine's Day. Put it on the calendar for next year if you don't mind using them.

  • I don't overly mind slugs but we don't have any as our chickens eat them. I think everyone should get a couple of chickens... Although they can destroy your plants as well.

cheap beer and bird friendly pellets, we still get some but plants are ok which is all that matters, we have plenty of resident blackbirds too which hopefully helps, would love some thrushes

Seeds DUH! image  After looking around tinternet it seems that "Bocking 14" is the one to get, bits of root to get it started.  Lots of quotes saying that once you've got it it's difficult to get rid of so will have to think carefully where it could go.

Judith, what's the relevance of valentines day? Maybe I'm a bit thick but I don't get it.  Not many slugs around then, too cold.

Kitty 2, apparently it's something to do with when the eggs are hatching, so it gets rid of all the baby ones. I read it on here and it was also mentioned on Gardeners World on TV once. I also feed the blackbirds so maybe they eat them.

  • I can see that the comfrey could be a pain, mine is mostly in a raised bed so contained a bit. I pulled up loads, have left a few clumps and now just keep on top of the new little ones that appear. Leaves go in the compost bin and roots go for recycling bin. The sterile version sounds like a bit of a winner though!

We've got a few blackbird visitors too which also helps with slug control.
