Cucumber Problems

I started some cucumbers from seed inside, then recently planted them outdoors. Within a few days, they have already started looking bad (see pics). The only bug I have seen on them is in one of the pics and it looks like a mosquito, but I could be wrong. I live in south Louisiana where it is very warm already, so cold weather hasn't been a factor. Any ideas?

Did you harden them off first?  Looks like slug damage on the leaves too.

  • No, I forgot to harden them off. I do have a few slugs in the yard, but haven't seen them on the plants. What is best way to control slugs?

Sink a little jam jar or cup nearby in the soil, and fill with beer, bitter or pale ale not lager. The slugs drown themselves in it.

  • Will do, thanks! I think I will also try to make a good habitat area (small brick pile) and check that twice a day for slugs. Kind of attract them over to it hopefully.

As well as the slug pubs, there are other ways to tempt them to leave your plants alone.

Slugs love the sweet inner leaves of lettuce - chop some up and  leave in little heaps to attract them - then pounce in the late evening!image

Also oranges and grapefruit - cut in half, take some out of the middle for your breakfast and then place the halves cut side down on the ground - go out first thing in the morning and remove the slugs while they're having their breakfast image

  • Where are you situ? I'm in the south but wouldn't think about setting my babies outside for at the very least another monthimage I'd give them a bit of protection or bring them in again which will get rid of the slug problemimage

Primrose - he's in Louisiana USA - don't think he'll be troubled by low temps image
