What treatment for new Pergola?

I can't see the point in applying a preservative to timber that already has been pressure treated with preservative, not when it's so new.

I'd agree Mark 499 except that there are (I feel) gaping wounds where it has been sawn.  My worry areas are the upright post ends, upright posts where the bituminous cover ends and soil infill begins and joints between the supports and crossbars.  I also worry that the wisteria will cover this thing by the end of the year and I'll have little manoevrability for treatment.  Maybe I worry too much! image

Yes I see your concerns but the only place I would worry about is where the posts meet the ground.

Thanks Edd.  I've given it tar boots so I painted the first couple of feet of the posts with bituminous paint and you're right, any damage/damage prevention is done now on that score!

I like the idea of a clear wax and I like the idea of it weathering in the sun to a lovely aged effect as this should set the wisteria off lovely.  If I get 25 years out of it, then I'd be happy, I don't expect to be here that long (I'll have downsized or gone to the big upstairs!) image so if I see it faring badly then I could change tack and treat it with something more aggressive.
