I live in Essex too and planted 3 different varieties outside last year because I had too many plants. This included varieties which were listed as greenhouse only. They were in a sheltered spot in full sun. I'd dug the area over recently but didn't add anything to the soil. They all produced more tomatoes than the ones in the greenhouse!
I always grow mine outside, lots of different varieties and all do well! The secret is too get the stakes in and secured as soon as possible and don't let them get too tall! A watering system helps too if that's possible
