How to prune a fir tree

I think it's a leylandii about 20' tall needing reducing by about 1/3 or 1/4 whilst maintaining its shape.  I don't want to trim as it's not a hedge.  Any ideas how to thin out and reduce?

    These trees don't behave like deciduous ones so if you take the top off, it will look like a tree with the top taken off.

    Thanks Verdun, I will take selective long branches back, let light and air in, hopefully it will thicken up whilst retaining a natural look.
