Decking border

Hello. We have a 300mm (W) x 300mm (D) gap between our new decking and grass. We were advised to keep it to allow air to circulate. I'd like to avoid using chuckles to finish it but am stumped what to do with it. We have young children so for now want to keep it level. Any ideas on the most effective way to fill/finish the gap? Thank you!

    I'd use a staked wooden board as an edge and then fill between the gap with 20mm gravel however that sounds like massive gap! Were they suggesting a moat?!?
