Thanks everyone its nice to know just what you have in your garden - my son has got an exciting year of finding out what is emerging from the ground as he has inherited quite an established garden.
If its an established garden there'll likely be all sorts of nice surprises waiting to emerge. I'd thoroughly recommend putting waterproof labels down as you identify emerging plants and start planting new ones! Several times I've removed some 'weeds' only to realise later they were actually plants I'd stuck in the previous year

Chaenomeles or Ornamental quince as it is also known.
They have hard round fruit which can be used in cooking as substitutes for the culinary quince
