Delphiniums second flush

I have just read an article that suggests you can get a second flowering on a delphinium if you cut the flower stem right back when it starts to look sad.  I must admit I hold on to my blooms right until the very last flower.  Has anyone had any joy with this method because I would hate to cut them back to find that there was no second flowering.

I cut back when it looks tired, maybe when more than half of the flowers have finished on 1 stalk

Yes cut back and give a good feed and water and they will give you a  second flush...It won't be as lush as the first flush but still worth doing imo... Good luck.image

I do as Mollis and get a smaller second flush.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thank you I will try this year with delphs and lupins.  Is a tomato feed the best or do you recommend something else.

Verdun - when you talk about feeding with FBB, do you just sprinkle round a handful and then tickle it in?  And how many times a year??
