Is this normal

Just had a stroll round the garden and, having planted loads of new plants this year, I am really pleased with how things are coming along.

The only plants that I am worried about are two bare root peony that were put in early Autumn last year, one is Sarah Bernhardt and the other is Duchesse de Nemours, and 3 bare root Agastache Blue Boa.

None of them seem to be making an appearance yet.  Am I being too impatient or should they be showing by now.

still only March. I visited some nurseries when I visited Surrey a couple of weeks back and the boss of one said " just waiting for the plant to catch up". so I'd not worry just yet.

Thanks Hostafan, it's just that everything else seems to be romping away and one new peony (white cap) and another that has been insitue for years are already showing.  I must admit to being an impatient gardener.

ALL gardeners have bouts of impatience . In the words of a Queen song " I want it all: and I want it now "

My Sarah Bernhardt isn't showing yet, I'm not worried, she comes up every year when she's ready.

    Thanks Lizzie, that's encouraging.

No sign of any of my peonies in either the back or the sunnier front.  Also, you'd expect established plants to start sooner than newly planted ones.

    Be patient.

Having said that, I find myself checking one bed with hostas in every day for signs of life because I need to lift, divide and re-home them so their existing bed can be replanted with something completely different.

tee hee obelixx. I do the same every day in the cool tunnel where I stored all my potted hostas. Walk up and down " yup, you're up, nope, you're still asleep"

The knee trouble has put the mass splitting I'd planned on hold and I think I might plant them in the tunnel for a season, feed them, let them bulk up for another season and split next year.

  • I wouldn't worry either.

I bought some enormously reduced Salvias from Crocus right at the end of last autumn and every one promptly died off when planted. Three of the six are now showing tiny shoots. Hopefully my Achillea does more than throw up a few shoots this year.

Still no sign of buds on any of my five Fuschias yet :/

Hostafan, I thought it was just me who talks to them! I've had some very awkward moments when a neighbour or the postman appears unexpectedly. My husband is used to it.
