A friend on a cookery forum has this suddenly appeared in a plant pot used for tomatoes last year.  It is 4-6 inches across and she says it 'has no height to it'.

My best thought is that it's a bit like radicchio but she can't think where it's come from.  She grew some mixed salad leaves a few years ago, but not in that pot.

 Anyone got any better ideas?

It looks like someone dropped mixed salad leaf seeds into the pot.  The red thing def looks like raddichio. It often appears like that the second year, usually in a tray ive thrown out already. I grow salad leaves in old polystyrene fish boxes, crop them for a few weeks, then chuck it out when the next batch is coming along.
