Is this compost ready?

This is what i've just taken from one of my compost bins.

Thing is, I've never used anything out of my compost bins before now and I don't know if this is ready to use or if it needs to rot down a bit more. The plan is to use some for my roses and on the freshly dug border but i didn't want to jump in and do it if it's not ready yet. Knew folk here would tell me right though.

I'd say it's ok to mulch, but you might well get some weeds coming through, so be vigilant, or, stick it back in the bins for a while longer.

Difficult to tell without getting down and dirty with the stuff but it does look a little lumpy still. If it breaks up into finer particles then it is probably okay but if it is intent on sticking together than I would chuck it back on the heap for a while longer.

How many compost heaps do you have?

I've got two on the go but ones quite new so not ready yet. We stopped for a while as we didn't think it was working. I Saw on GW Monty putting some mulch around raspberries so I think I'll use some for ours.

    Thanks guys image

I think it takes a while for some heaps to get into balance. Keep chucking the stuff in the bin and it'll get going eventually. I have three on my allotment and one of them is certainly reluctant to do anything useful so that one is going to get turned.

I think your raspberries will be very happy with that mulch.
