Venus Fly Trap

Where in the us is the best place to buy a compost mix to grow Venus Fly Trap from seed in the uk. People say use 1 part perlite and 3 parts peat or use 100% CocoPeat.

Your question doesn't make it clear if you're requesting information for the US or UK. Please clarify...

Personally, I don't have the info you need if you're in the US. Maybe someone else here can...?

However, if you're in the UK I might just be able to help...

Personally, I haven't sown vft seeds but the reviews on this product state that it's certainly suitable...

After a lot of research and being unable to find anything suitable locally, I purchased 2 bags last week, they arrived the next day and I finally got round to using it yesterday. The soil itself is very fine and sandy, seems ok, but I'm no expert in such things...

From a small vft that my kids nagged me to buy 18 months ago (never taking them to homebase again!) to 13!! yes, 13 vft's that I've now potted into individual polystyrene cups. Guess what I'm giving as gifts this year? image

Anyway, I've split and potted on now so only time will tell if the soil is any good... The vft's will probably be dead or dying this time next week if it's not. And I'll be in a whole heap of trouble! image

I'll keep you updated if you like before you decide whether or not to make the purchase?

Thanks Lori, i've been looking around for peat today at local garden centres but no one seems to sell it. Why is this so hard to get?.

I have no idea why it's so difficult to get hold of. Mind you, many things are difficult to find here in Pembrokeshire, so it came as no surprise that I couldn't find a garden centre that stocked it. The fact that none could (or perhaps would?) order it in was a little baffling though. Never mind. I've got it now. If it's good I'll get it again.....if not, well, I guess I just won't need to buy any more!

I'll let you know how it goes...

Thanks Edd. Wish I'd known about that before last week. Certainly would have been the cheaper option in the long run, especially bearing in mind how quickly these vft's fill their pots!

I wonder if they can be grown outdoors successfully in the UK? Would free up some much needed windowsill space so I can get some seeds started. Oh, I wish I had a greenhouse! image

According to your first post people recommend it? Though several sites I checked say it is problematic (it expands and contracts with watering, the plants don't like that).

Why not buy your compost from a specialist supplier like here:

No worries, I had to buy one of their venus fly trap seed kits while I was on there looking for the compost. image
