Mine grew tallsh last year but the heads were sorry state, seeing your pics I might give them a go again perhaps the multi headed shorter ones like in the front of one of the pics
On that particular year I was growing the taller varieties as a bit of fun for my son. I think some of them were Mongolia which had massive heads. A kind member of this forum also provided me with some of the seeds. I grow them every year, and I need to get some seeds for this year.
Planning on growing Sunflower Vanilla Ice and Black Magic. Have never grown them before. Will be sowing them in the next few days. I was thinking of starting them off in the heated propagator if they like heat and then transfering them into individual pots before hardening off in the greenhouse.
Don't know Matty but my propogator has quite a high dome so I should be able to get small pots under it. It can't hurt so I'm going to give it a try. I just need to get a batch out of the propogator and potted on so I have room.
I never have to plant them. I feed the birds all winter and they plant them everywhere for me! I end up having to pull some and transplant others because they always come up in the wrong place.
I tried that Vanilla Ice a couple years ago though. It was very pretty but it only got about 2 feet tall. I was a little disappointed.
That will suit me seil, I didn't want the great big tall variety, although on my packet of Fothergills seeds it says they grow to 5ft and the Black Magic variety grow to 4ft. I'll just have to wait and see, that's if they germinate OK.

I had trouble with squirrels biting the whole head off and taking off with it.... before the seed had fully ripened.

I think I'm correct in saying that sunflowers rely on heat, rather than daylight to grow and flower.
Somel ovely photos
I'm going to grow them as part of my cutting garden but have never had much success in the past, some will go in containers as well.
Based on what you say I need to get my containers sorted out
I have some tall ones but most seeds are small including one which is supposed to be pollen free so ideal for in the house.
Well I'll have a go anyway

Vanilla Ice is one of the ones I have. I had thought of starting them off with heat - going to use plastic drinking cups, seem about the right size.
Wonder if it's right - heat that is?

Unless I buy another heated propogator
