Cats.........stop them from messing in my garden!!!

Hi all, I am in need of some help - I have not long since moved into my property and have discovered that the lady over the road has 8 cats which keep using my garden as a latrine!!  I have two cats but they are house cats at the moment and so I am looking for help identifying some plants that will keep the cats away from certain parts of my garden.... any ideas???

Hi there was an earlier thread on this that suggested soaking tea bags in Keyes fluid and laying around the perimeter creating a barrier to them . I'm not good at searching for previous threads, or would dig it out for you

As you can imagine, there are a lot of threads on this subject (some get quite heated) - here is one of the most recent with some helpful ideas http://www.gardenersworld.com/forum/fruit-andamp-veg/cat-poo-on-my-raised-veg-beds/628514.html

The most effective and also most humane weapon against unwanted cats is a water scarecrow.  You just need an outside tap and the device.   Google for info.

They work. Needs constant mains pressure water supply. Use metal fittings not plastic ones on the hose, else they will 'pop off' and flood  your garden. Usually when you are out.

I suffered the same fate for 6 years, tried everything imaginable and nothing worked until a bought one of these. Problem finally solved, I have several now covering different parts of the garden. image

I used to live in a house, where 3 doors down there was a 'cat-woman/spinster' who had something like 11 or 12 cats and they used to do their business on my lawn every day, multiple times a day.

As I am allergic to cats and have a young child, I tried EVERYTHING to keep them out. However, I only found 1 thing that seemed to work - Cayenne Pepper. Sure, it's probably not the most cat-friendly thing to use, but then when you have tried everything else, what else can you do?

1 - It's dirt cheap. Much cheaper than all that 'Lion's Roar' rubbish that doesn't work

2 - It's freely available from any supermarket and can even be bought in bulk

3 - To use, sprinkle generously where they go, and any 'open space' in flower beds

4 - If it rains, re-sprinkle everywhere again.

5 - Persevere. It may take a couple of weeks to a month of repetitive sprinkling, but it was so effective for me that the cats never go on my flowerbeds and lawn anymore (even though I reduced it's usage to once every few months) - they only ever walk along the fence to 'go' next door! (sorry ex-neighbour)

If you really can't go down this route then the other alternative is to get one of those big 'Savannah' or 'Maine Coon' cats to scare them off.

  • Ive had similar issues and tried various methods, the one bringing me the best results has been citron.

Using lemon and orange peelings (which do look a bit untidy) in the affected areas and citronella candles at the main entrances the cats use. The more wax that drips, the more it seems to work.
