Weed membrane good or bad?

  • I don't really understand membrane - you need to put a deep amount of gravel in order  it not to lift up and show, but if you use that much gravel you don't need a membrane.

My neighbour and I both coincidentally redid a gravel area at the same time last month.  I didn't use membrane, they did.

Their membrane is showing, I have weeds. imageimage

I used to use it in planting areas but now I only for paths or under a hedge to keep it clear, especially where it would be difficult to get in at and weed. I think Verd's right about it causing more issues than it resolves.

If you're anything like me, you want to re arrange  plants ( or plants bulbs)  five minutes after you've put them in .... image

....and that's a real pain in the a*** image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Glad you've said that Fairy. Thought it was just me!

You do have to watch out for bindweed under membrane I will say. If that gets under there it's like an alien horror movie. You lift up the membrane and it is lined with thick white roots - horrible *shudders*

nothing wrong with membrane but too often on allotment sites it is used as

cover of ground simply because the plot holder cant be bothered to utilise all

    of the ground .

as verdun said ground should be dug over and aired.

perhaps this particular eye sore could be controlled if council officials were a

lot more stricter about how long the membrane was allowed to remain on one

    particular piece of ground.
