Mature Beech Trees - Splitting Bark
In my garden we have a number of mature beech trees. Last summer I noticed the bark on one of the trees starting to split vertically. This has now spilt the full height of the tree c. 25 feet and the nearby trees are starting to show similar vertical splits in their bark.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this - parasite. fungal, virus - whether there's anything I can do and whether ultimately it is going to kill the trees. Any information would be very welcome.
Many thanks.

Having lost a 200 year old beech tree in the winter storms I would definitely recommend a tree surgeon ( make sure he's not looking for business, ask your local garden centre) comes and surveys the tree
