A small wildlife pond?

i have a tin bath my mum gave me last year, at the time I wasn't sure whether to use it as a big plant pot or a pond.  Now I think I'd like to use it as a pond, but I'm not sure where to put it and whether I should sink it or leave it above the soil, maybe In a place on the patio but surrounded by pots??

Any ideas and help from those in the know would be great, I can post pics of possible locations if you want. Tx

If you are thinking of using it as a pond, would it be just for plants? I think it would get too hot on a patio for fish as the tin would retain too much heat. If you were to bury it I guess it would rust over time? I think it would look good as a pond feature for plants and then use plants and pots round it.

  • I didnt make that clear sorry, no fish (my beagles would have them!!) just plants and hopefully try and attract so,e dragon flies etc.

If you Google "mini ponds" you will find lots of images of the sort of thing you are trying to achieve. It should help with inspiration.

It would look great with water in and a grass/rush in. Ive had a small pond for 6 years now no sign of dragonflys though image

I used a central heater water tank, about 60cm x 45cm x 60 cm deep as a "wildlife pond" I had a stack of bricks in one corner to allow critters to climb out and the frogs loved it.

Pauline, I never found the water going stagnant I have to say. I used water from the water butt to top it up , and it was in a slightly shaded area which might have helped.

Think if you put oxygenators in it stops the water going stagnant.  I have a half barrel that acts as a mini pond but that does have a pump in there.  Sometimes I wish it didn't as I would love to put a water lilly in there but they prefer still water.

Putting in a couple of pond snails will help keep the water sweet too. image
